Introduction
Setting up a good tag system is key to improving your website's SEO. Tags help organize your content, making it easier for readers to find articles on similar topics, while also improving your site's ranking on search engines. Below, we explain how to choose which tags to create to optimize your SEO.
What Are Tags, and Why Are They Important?
Every time you create a tag, Newsifier automatically generates a tag page for that tag. A tag page displays all articles linked to the tag and includes a space at the top of the page where you can add some descriptive text. This helps search engines understand the content of your website, which can drive more traffic to your site.
Properly set up tag pages can attract a lot of search traffic, especially when you include relevant descriptive text.
Best Practices for Creating Tags
Limit the Number of Tags: Only create tags for topics you frequently write about. Avoid creating tags that you’ll only use a few times, as tag pages with very few linked articles can negatively affect your SEO.
Tip: A good rule of thumb is to create tags only if you plan to use them at least five times.
Focus on SEO: Tags should help boost your website’s search traffic. Create tags based on keywords that are frequently searched on Google. The more popular a keyword is, the more sense it makes to create a tag for it.
Tip: Be sure to add relevant, descriptive text to your tag pages to improve their SEO potential.
Avoid Duplicate Tags: Be careful not to create tags that are too similar, like “Maxverstappen” and “Max Verstappen.” Google may get confused, which can hurt your SEO performance.
Tip: Always check if a tag already exists before creating a new one.
FAQ
Why is my tag page not working or returning a "Not Found" page?
If your tag page is not working or returns a "Not Found" page, it may be because the tag does not have enough linked articles. By default, Newsifier requires at least five articles to be associated with a tag before creating a visible tag page. This prevents Google from flagging your tag page as "thin content," which can negatively impact your SEO.
Solution: If you need the tag to appear with fewer than five articles, you can adjust this setting. Go to Settings > Layout > Min articles for a tag to be visible, and lower the threshold as needed. The default setting is five, but you can customize it to fit your needs. Why doesn’t this tag appear on the article page?
If a tag is not appearing below your article, it's likely because the tag doesn't yet have enough associated articles. As per the default setting, tags need to be linked to at least five articles before they are displayed on article pages.
Solution: You can either create more content using this tag or change the default threshold. To do this, navigate to Settings > Layout > Min articles for a tag to be visible, and adjust the required number of articles.
