Why It’s Important to Add Descriptive Text to Your Tag and Category Pages

Adding descriptive text to your tag and category pages is essential for two reasons:

  1. Improving Search Rankings: The text helps Google better understand what your page is about, allowing it to rank your page for the right keywords.

  2. Reducing Bounce Rate: Adding relevant text keeps visitors on your page longer, lowering the bounce rate (the percentage of visitors who leave your website immediately).

Best Practices for Adding Text to Improve SEO

  1. Include Relevant Keywords: Add keywords related to the tag or category to the text on your tag page. You can use tools like KeywordTool.io to find related keywords.

  2. Answer Frequently Asked Questions: Include the most frequently asked questions about the tag in the text on the tag page. The most frequently asked questions about a particular word can be found via the Keyword Magic Tool in SEMRUSH. In this tool, you can enter the tag and see what questions people have about this tag (topic).
Note: This only works with tags (topics) that have enough search traffic.

You can also write separate articles about the answers to these questions, and then link to these articles from the tag page. This way, you always have articles with a high CTR (Click-Through Rate) at the top of the page, which will lower the bounce rate and improve the page's SEO.

  3. Write Enough Text: Make sure your tag page has at least 100 words. The more useful content you add, the better your tag page will perform.

Using H1 and H2 Tags on Tag and Category Pages

To help your tag pages rank better, use a clear heading structure:

  • The H1 tag is automatically applied to the title of the page.

  • Use H2 tags for subheadings if your text is longer. This helps Google understand your content better.

  • For more detailed sections, you can use H3-H6 tags, but make sure your headings follow a logical structure.

Why Meta Titles and Meta Descriptions Are Important

Each tag and category page should have an optimized Meta Title and Meta Description for two reasons:

  1. Improving Search Rankings: A good meta title and meta description help Google understand the page and rank it for the right keywords.

  2. Attracting Clicks: These elements are what users see in search results. A well-written Meta Title and Meta Description encourage users to click on your page, and higher click-through rates (CTR) can improve your rankings.

How to Write Meta Titles for Tag and Category Pages

  1. Include the main keyword in the Meta Title.

  2. Make the title engaging to encourage users to click. For example: “Read all the latest news about <tag name> here”

  3. Keep the title under 60 characters.

  4. Experiment with titles to improve the CTR. You can try adding “(TIP)” to grab attention or ask a question. Example: “Want to know the latest news about <tag name>? (TIP)”

  5. Look at how other top-ranked pages are titled for inspiration.

How to Write Meta Descriptions for Tag and Category Pages

  1. Include the main keyword in the Meta Description.

  2. You have up to 320 characters, but make sure the most important information is in the first 155 characters for mobile search results.

  3. Just like with Meta Titles, experiment to see what drives the most clicks.
