1. Before you start

Who should do this?

Setting up ads is done by whoever is responsible for your advertising. For most publishers, that is an ad agency or an in-house ad manager. Newsifier provides the tools and explains how they work; the ad agency provides the ad codes and decides where they go.

If you are a publisher reading this, the easiest path is to give your agency access (see section 2) and send them this article.

How Newsifier can help

Our support team is happy to answer any question about the steps in this guide, whether it comes from you or from your agency. If something is truly needed from our side, we can take care of it for a custom fee.

Where ads are managed

Ads live in two places in your Newsifier dashboard. You will use both.

Where

What it's for

Buildifier (opened from Ads Website > Go to Buildifier)

Ad codes that run on every page, head tags, and ad slots placed anywhere on your pages (homepage, article page, tag page, and so on).

Ads Website page in the CMS

Ads that appear inside the text of your articles (for example, "after the 3rd paragraph").

What is Buildifier? Buildifier is Newsifier's visual page builder. It is the same tool our own team uses to build your website pages. It shows you a live preview of each page type, and you can click on any part of the page to add an ad slot above or below it. Nothing is written in code; you point, click, and paste.

A few words you will see

  • Script: a small piece of code your ad provider gives you. It "loads" the ads. Usually it is either a block of code, or a link ending in .js.

  • Ad slot / ad position: the place on the page where an ad appears. In Buildifier this is a Raw HTML block.

  • Min height: the amount of space (in pixels) reserved for an ad before it loads. This stops the page from jumping. More on this in section 11.

  • Head tags: extra lines placed in the invisible "head" of every page. Ad providers and Google sometimes ask you to add these to verify your site or to speed up ad loading.

2. Give your ad agency access

Your agency needs its own login with the Advertiser role. This role only shows the ad-related parts of the dashboard, so the agency cannot touch articles, settings, or your team.

There are two ways to get this account:

  1. Newsifier creates it for you. In most cases, Newsifier creates the Advertiser account during onboarding and shares it with you. You then pass it on to your agency.

  2. You create it yourself. Go to Staff in the left menu, add a new staff member, and choose the role Advertiser. Full instructions: How to Add and Manage Staff Members in Newsifier.

3. Step 1: Add scripts that run on every page (Global Scripts)

Most ad setups start with one or more scripts that must load on every page of the site. Typical examples:

  • Your ad provider's main loader (Google Ad Manager / GPT, Prebid, your agency's own tag)

  • Your consent management platform (CMP) script (cookie consent banner). This must load on every page and usually before the ad scripts.

  • Viewability or measurement scripts

How to add a global script

  1. In the dashboard, go to Ads Website (under Monetizing) and click Go to Buildifier.

  2. At the top of Buildifier, click Global Scripts.

  3. Click Add Script.

  4. Fill in the fields (explained below) and click OK.

  5. Save the page (see "Saving your work" in section 6). The script now runs on every page of the site.

The fields, in plain language

  • ID: A name for your own reference, for example cmp-cookiebot or gam-loader. Only letters, numbers and dashes. This is only shown to you.

  • Type: how the script was given to you

    • Content: your provider gave you a block of code. Paste the code without the opening <script> and closing </script> lines.

    • Link: your provider gave you a web address ending in .js (for example https://securepubads.g.doubleclick.net/tag/js/gpt.js). Paste only the address.

  • Strategy: when the script should load.
    Choose one:

    • Before Interactive: loads as early as possible, in the head of the page, before anything else. Use this only when your provider explicitly says the script must be in the <head>. Typical for CMP/consent scripts and the main ad loader.

    • After Interactive: loads right after the page content has appeared. This is the default and the safe choice for most ad scripts.

    • Lazy Load: loads only when the visitor starts scrolling or interacting. Best for scripts that are not critical, such as measurement or social widgets. It keeps the page fast.

  • Origin

  • Content: The code or the link, depending on the Type you chose.

💡 Tip: Keep it to one script per entry. If your provider sends three separate snippets, add three entries.

4. Step 2: Add head tags (Meta Tags and Head Links)

Some providers ask you to add a meta tag (to verify you own the site, for example Google AdSense or a brand-safety vendor) or a link tag (for example a preconnect line that lets the browser reach the ad server earlier and load ads faster).

Both are added in Buildifier, next to Global Scripts, and both apply to every page.

  • Meta tags

  1. In Buildifier, click Meta Tags at the top.

  2. Click Add.

  3. Enter the name and content exactly as your provider gave them. For example, if you received <meta name="google-adsense-account" content="ca-pub-123456">, the name is google-adsense-account and the content is ca-pub-123456.

  4. Click OK and save the page.

  • Head links

  1. In Buildifier, click Head Links at the top.

  2. Click Add.

  3. Enter the rel and href values from your provider. For example, for <link rel="preconnect" href="https://securepubads.g.doubleclick.net">, rel is preconnect and href is the address.

  4. Click OK and save the page.

📌 Note: If your provider sends you a full <script> tag that "must be in the head," that is a Global Script with Strategy set to Before Interactive (section 3), not a meta tag or head link.

5. Step 3: Add scripts for one page only (Current Page Scripts)

Sometimes a script should only run on one page type, for example a video player only on article pages, or a sponsorship script only on the homepage.

  1. In Buildifier, choose the page type from the list on the left (Home page, Article page, Tag page, and so on).

  2. Click Current Page Scripts at the top.

  3. Click Add Script and fill in the form exactly as in section 3.

  4. Click OK and save the page.

The script now runs only on that page type. Repeat for other page types if needed.

6. Step 4: Place ad slots on your pages with Buildifier

This is where you decide where ads appear: top of the homepage, between article lists, in the sidebar of the article page, and so on.

Page types

On the left of Buildifier you see every page type of your site:

  • Home page

  • Article page (used for every article)

  • Tag page

  • Author page

  • User page

  • Search page

  • Profile page

  • Match Center page (only if you have the Livescores and football data feature)

You place ads per page type. An ad slot added to the Article page appears on every article; a slot added to the Home page appears only on the homepage.

Add an ad slot

  1. Click the page type on the left, for example Home page. A preview of the page appears.

  2. Click the element on the page where you want the ad, for example the first article list. A + icon appears at the bottom of it.

  3. Click + and choose whether to add above or below that element.

  4. Click Add, then choose Miscellaneous > Raw HTML.

  5. Fill in the Raw HTML block (explained below) and click Add.

  6. Save the page (see below).

The Raw HTML block

  • HTML / code: Paste the ad code for this slot exactly as your provider gave it (this time including any <script> or <div> tags).

  • Min height (desktop) and Min height (mobile): The space reserved for the ad on each device, in pixels. Numbers only: type 250, not 250px. A value with "px" is ignored, which means no space is reserved and the page will jump when the ad loads. See section 11 for how to choose the right number.

  • Device Visibility: Choose where this ad slot should show:

    • Show all: desktop and mobile.

    • Hide on mobile: desktop only.

    • Hide on desktop: mobile only.

A hidden slot takes up no space on that device, so nothing jumps and no empty gap is left. Use this when an ad unit is made for one device only, for example a 970×250 leaderboard (desktop only) or a 320×50 sticky banner (mobile only).

If the slot shows on both devices, fill in both min heights with the correct value for each device.

Two ads side by side (containers)

To put ads next to each other in one row, add a Container first, choose its layout (for example two columns), then add a Raw HTML block inside each column. The width of an ad slot is set by the container it is in, so pick the container layout before adding ads.

Device Visibility can also be set on a container: select the container, and in the right sidebar choose the option under Device Visibility. This hides everything inside it on that device at once.

Saving your work

Changes are saved per page. Before you switch to another page type, save the page you are on, otherwise your changes are lost.

  1. Click the button in the top-right corner of Buildifier (it shows your user name).

  2. Click Save for the current page.

  3. Only then click another page type on the left.

Saved changes are live on your website right away. No deployment from Newsifier is needed for ad slots and scripts.

⚠️ Common mistake: Editing the Home page, then clicking Article page without saving. The Home page changes are gone.

Ads on the Match Center page

If you have the Livescores and football data feature, ads on the Match Center page work the same way, with one limit: ads can only go above or below the Match Center block, not between its internal parts (lineups, statistics, matches). The Match Center is one block that cannot be split.

  1. Select Match Center page on the left.

  2. Click the main Match Center block and use the + above or below it.

  3. Add Miscellaneous > Raw HTML, paste the code, set the min heights, click Add, and save the page.

7. Step 5: Place ads inside article text (Ads page in the CMS)

Ads between the paragraphs of an article are not added in Buildifier. They are added on the Ads Website page in the CMS, because they need to sit inside the article text itself.

Add an in-article ad

  1. In the dashboard left menu, under Monetizing, click Ads Website. You see the list of existing in-article ads.

  2. Click Add Ads (top right).

  3. Fill in the form (explained below) and click Save.

The fields, in plain language

  • Name: An internal name so you can recognise the ad in the list, for example In-article 1 – after paragraph 3. Visitors do not see it.

  • Content: The ad code from your provider. Paste it as given.

  • Adblock alternative: Content shown in this position to visitors who use an ad blocker.

  • Safe content and Not safe content: Lets you show a different ad code on articles marked as brand-safe and on articles marked as not brand-safe. Leave both empty to always use the main Content in normal cases

  • Published: Yes to make the ad live, No to keep it off without deleting it.

  • Position: Where in the article the ad appears, for example Article – After block 3. A "block" is one paragraph, image, or embed in the article. You can pick any position within the first 40 blocks.

  • Min height: While not a type of ad, the min-height setting is an important feature that ensures consistent ad display. Defining a minimum height for each ad position prevents Content Layout Shift (CLS), where content moves unexpectedly as ads load. This setting helps ensure a smoother user experience and avoids potential SEO penalties. See section 11.

  • Hide on Categories: Start typing a category name and pick from the suggestions. The ad will not show on articles in those categories. Useful for sponsored sections or sensitive news categories.

  • Hide on Article Types: Same, for article types such as video, gallery, or normal. For example, hide an ad on video articles where the player already takes the space.

  • Banner Rotation: Newsifier also allows for banner rotation within a single ad position. To use this feature, select the checkbox 'Banner Rotation' in the ad editor. This enables you to insert multiple ads separated by three stripes (---), as shown in the example below:

    <a href="#">
    <img src="first_banner.jpg" />
    </a>
    ---
    <a href="#">
    <img src="second_banner.jpg" />
    </a>

When your page loads, it will randomly display one of the banners. For example, the first time the page might display first_banner.jpg, and when you reload, it might show second_banner.jpg. This feature helps to keep ads fresh and varied for users.

💡 Tip: Want a second in-article ad lower down? Create a second entry with a different position. Each entry is one slot.

8. Step 6: Add required files such as ads.txt

Ad providers require an ads.txt file on your domain (and app-ads.txt if you have a mobile app). It tells advertisers who is allowed to sell your ad space. Without it, many advertisers will not bid on your inventory.

You do not need server access. Files are created in the CMS.

  1. In the left menu, click Files (under Monetizing).

  2. Look for an existing ads.txt. Newsifier usually creates it for you at setup. Click it to edit. If it does not exist, click Add new file.

  3. Route: the file name exactly as required, for example ads.txt or app-ads.txt. Under the field you see the full address where it will be available.

  4. Content: paste the lines your agency gave you.

  5. Published: Yes.

  6. Click Save.

The file is now live at https://yourdomain.com/ads.txt. Check it by opening that address in your browser, or click Visit File.

📌 Note: The same Files section works for any other file a provider asks for, such as a verification file (abc123.html) or a provider script file. Leave Redirect url empty unless your provider asks for a redirect.

If you don't see Files in your menu, contact Newsifier.

9. Selling your own ads? The Custom Ads Manager

Everything above is for ads that come from an ad network or ad server (Google Ad Manager, Prebid, your agency's tags). If you also sell ads directly to local businesses or sponsors, and want to upload the banner yourself, set a start and end date, and rotate several banners in one spot, there is a separate tool for that: the Custom Ads Manager.

What it does

  • Upload an image (or paste HTML) and set the link it should go to.

  • Rotate several ads in one position (each ad shows for 12 seconds, then the next).

  • Schedule a campaign with a start and end date; it stops by itself.

  • Place the same ad in several positions, or let it appear randomly within an area.

  • See all running campaigns, filter them, and switch them on or off from one screen.

How to get it

The Custom Ads Manager is not switched on by default and the ad positions have to be built into your site by Newsifier. This is a paid setup. To request it, contact support with:

  1. Where on the site you want the positions (for example "right of the latest news list on the homepage").

  2. How many ad blocks per position.

  3. The size of each block. Standard sizes are 728×90, 620×100, 300×125, 300×180, 300×250 and 120×180; other sizes can be arranged.

We'll send you a quote, build the positions, and enable the tool in your dashboard. From then on you manage the ads yourself. Full instructions: How to Use the Custom Ads Manager in Newsifier.

💡 Tip: Both systems can run side by side. Many publishers use an ad network for most positions and the Custom Ads Manager for one or two premium spots sold directly.

10. Custom CSS

Occasionally an agency needs a small styling change, for example centering an ad or adding spacing. This is done in Buildifier > Settings > Custom CSS.

📌 Note: Unlike ad slots and scripts, Custom CSS is not live immediately. After saving your CSS, contact Newsifier support and ask us to deploy it. Only then does it appear on the live site.

11. Keeping your site fast and SEO-friendly

Ads are the number one cause of a poor Core Web Vitals score, which Google uses for ranking. The main problem is layout shift (CLS): the page "jumps" when an ad loads and pushes the content down. Google's limit is a CLS of 0.1; a site with badly set ads can easily score 0.3 or more and lose search and Discover traffic.

The good news: on Newsifier, almost all of this is solved by setting the min height correctly on every ad slot. Please read this part carefully.

The min height rules

  1. Every ad slot must have a min height. Buildifier Raw HTML blocks and CMS in-article ads alike. An empty field means no space is reserved.

  2. Numbers only. 250, never 250px. A value with "px" is ignored, which is the same as leaving it empty.

  3. Use the real height of the ad unit. If the slot always serves a 300×250, the min height is 250. If the unit can serve several sizes (for example 300×250 and 336×280), use the tallest one (280).

  4. Set both desktop and mobile when a slot shows on both devices. A 970×250 on desktop and a 320×100 on mobile need 250 and 100, not the same number twice.

  5. Hide what does not run on a device. If a unit only serves on desktop, set Device Visibility to Hide on mobile. Otherwise mobile visitors get an empty box of reserved space.

💡 Best practice for agencies: Restrict each ad unit to one size in your ad server. Then the reserved space is exact: no jumping and no empty gaps. If a unit must serve multiple sizes, accept that the space will sometimes be a little too big.

Ads that Newsifier cannot protect

Some scripts inject ads outside any ad slot, straight into the page: push-down banners, interstitials, anchor/sticky ads that animate open. These are added by the provider's script, not by a Raw HTML block, so there is nothing to reserve space for. If such an ad animates its height open, every frame is a layout shift.

If you use these formats, ask your provider to reserve the height up front, or to animate with an overlay instead of pushing content down. Newsifier cannot fix this on the platform side.

Other tips

  • Use Lazy Load for scripts that are not needed immediately.

  • Load your CMP (consent) script first, as a Global Script with Before Interactive, so ads only load after consent, as required in the EU.

  • Keep the number of ad slots reasonable. Each one adds load time.

  • After changes, test with Google PageSpeed Insights: enter an article URL and check the CLS value for mobile and desktop.

12. FAQ

  1. I saved a script in Buildifier but nothing changed on the site.
A: Check that you saved the page (top-right user button > Save), not only the script dialog. Then reload the site with a hard refresh. If the script is set to Lazy Load, scroll down to trigger it.

  2. The page still jumps when ads load.

A: Open each ad slot and check the min height: is it filled in, is it numbers only, and is it filled for both desktop and mobile? Also check the in-article ads on the Ads Website page. If everything is set and it still jumps, the shift is likely caused by a provider script that injects ads outside the slots (section 11).

  3. Can the ad agency break my content or settings?
A: No. The Advertiser role only sees ad-related parts of the dashboard and a reduced Buildifier.

  4. Where does a script go if my provider says "add this to the head"?
A: Global Scripts with Strategy Before Interactive (section 3). Meta tags and link tags go in Meta Tags / Head Links (section 4).

  5. Do I need to ask Newsifier to publish my changes?
A: No, except for Custom CSS (section 10). Ad slots, scripts, in-article ads, and files are live as soon as you save.

  6. Can I place an ad inside the Match Center?
A: Only above or below it, not between its parts (section 6).

  7. Where do I create ads.txt / app-ads.txt / a verification file?
A: Files in the left menu (section 8).

  8. Can I show a different ad to mobile and desktop visitors in the same spot?
A: Yes. Add two Raw HTML blocks at the same place, one with Hide on mobile and one with Hide on desktop.

  9. I want to sell a banner directly to a local business and set it live for two weeks. Where do I do that?
A: That's the Custom Ads Manager (section 9). It needs a one-time paid setup by Newsifier; after that you upload and schedule the banners yourself.

  10. My in-article ad shows one block lower than the position I chose, for example below a subheading instead of above it.
A: Very short paragraphs do not count as a block for in-article ad positions. By default, a paragraph needs at least 50 characters to count. Shorter lines, such as a one-line teaser or an intro line like "More in today's update:", are skipped, and the ad moves on to the next block that does count. Headings, images and embeds always count. To fix it on a single article, merge the short line into the paragraph before it or make it longer than 50 characters. If your articles often use short lines on purpose, contact Newsifier support and we can set a different minimum paragraph length for your site. This is a site-wide setting, so changing it can shift every in-article ad that follows a short paragraph.

  11. I need something that isn't covered here.
A: Contact Newsifier support. We'll answer questions for free; if the work needs to be done on our side, we'll send you a quote first.
